The next day Jay decided we should vacate the Sheraton Double-Tree and get into another hotel room. Given the fact that I felt like a bird in a cage I was all for moving to a larger space.
Jay had fears that maybe the hotel room could be bugged. Seriously?!! Yes, seriously.
Prior to the show actually being postponed/cancelled Mahdi had told Jay that he had called Jay but got another local magician on the phone instead. You see Jay had been given a local simm card from a local magician and producer, David. David had answered the phone and said yes, that this was on of his numbers. Hmnnn, since that call Jay did not know if his phone was being monitored.
We are taking magic shows here not international security secrets–but this was the atmosphere I had found myself in with Jay which led him to think that possibly the room may have been bugged and that we weren’t safe.
This makes sense when you take into consideration that I believe that Jay has Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
Sam Vaknin, Ph.D. in his book, Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited – states
“The narcissist is hungry for ‘narcissistic supply‘. Even his paranoia is a
‘grandiose’ one. Through it, he proves to himself that he is sufficiently
important, interesting, and enough of a threat to be threatened back, to have
people conspire and worry over him, in other words: to be the subject of
incessant attention. This narcissistic supply needs constant feeding. He sees
enemies everywhere (mainly in his mind) and has delusions of grandeur. He
continually tries to sound important; and important men deserve important
enemies. The narcissist believes he has much greater power than he really
possesses. Such ‘power’ would look misplaced and abnormal without opponents. The
victories that the narcissist scores over his (mostly imagined) enemies serve to
emphasize his superiority.“
The opponents in the this story were Amir, the promoter who may or may not have been involved in criminal activities and Mahdi Moudini, an Iranian magician with few friends in the local magic circuit and with a reputation for lying and cheating others.
With the cancellation of the show it would appear that there could be an opponent around every corner. And Jay’s instincts to go into hiding kicked in.

This line pretty much covers it all doesn’t it ‘I’? All sounds rather dodgy and a tad frightening.

At the time I had no knowledge of NPD or that Jay could possibley have this mental/emotional disorder. The whole situation was surreal and quite unbelieveable. If I wasn’t there to witness the goings on I would not have believed much of it. Being in a foreign country there was not much to do but to trust this man…..
