Healing Tools……………….2

toothache

A couple of weeks ago I found myself with this incredible toothache on my next to last molar.  I bit down on something (can not remember what I was eating) but this amazing pain just shot through my mouth.  Great I thought, I hate the dentist.  As a matter of fact I hate going to any doctor.  I have to be in intolerable pain or practically dying before I will go to the doctors.

I thought I would not be able to avoid the dentist at this point.  Granted I used a groupon to get my teeth whitened about a year ago.  I will go to doctors for cosmetic work–but that is different-go figure.  And I used a groupon to get an initial exam, x-rays and cleaning but when the dentist assistant comes out to tell me they recommend $5000.00 worth of work–I am thinking, “No, thank you.”  Seriously if I had an extra $5000.00 laying around I could go to work.  I most certainly would not get what I think is extraneous dental work.

So, explain to me how a crown works?  You file down what is there of my tooth, to put a fake tooth cover over it–hmnn and this is supposed to help how?   OH and a deep cleaning is $600.00, seriously.  Hey I know most of the dentist in Los Angeles need to pay off their USC dental school bill but not on my wallet.

When you don’t have health or dental insurance and all costs are out of pocket you think twice about what a dentist or doctor recommends.

Like, I said no thank you.  As long as I can eat and I have no pain I am fine.

Well now there is a pain.  Now what do I do?  Well, I look up USC dental school and check their rates.  If this is a root canal job it will cost about $400.00.  Great I have two puppies on the way, business has been slow I do not need $400.00 to just fly out of my bank account.

And my mother is out-of-town so I can’t do anything till she gets back so she can drive me in the event I need to be put under.  So in the meantime I start looking into dental plans and how to manage the pain until I can make an appointment.

I go to Target and buy some Orajel for baby teething pain. It’s a little gel that numbs the gums.  It tastes kind of funny but it does work to ease the pain and the throbbing.  I also take Tylenol and napoxim sodium as well.  Between the jel and the pills I manage the pain.

The other thing I am doing is only eating on the left side of my mouth.  Did you know that the natural thing to do when chewing is to alternate between one side of the mouth and the other?  I did not know that.  As a matter of fact I never really gave it much thought to how I ate only how much I ate. So, yes it does take concentrated effort to only eat on one side of the mouth.  Try it the next time you have a meal and only chew on one side.  Interesting isn’t it.

I also started using an antiseptic mouthwash as well.  And my friend Mayr had recommended Neems Mouthwash.

So I go to Whole Foods Market to get the mouth wash and to see if they have any kind of homeopathic remedy for toothaches.

Yes, they have the mouth wash and I also get a liquid clove herbal extract.  You are supposed to put 15-20 drops in a liter of water, really that much water.  Well I take a shoot glass of water and use about 5 drops of water.

There other thing I did was to start using a soft-head tooth brush so that I could massage the gums around the painful tooth.  It has been about two weeks since I have been using the regime of mouth wash morning and evening and the clove extract in the mornings.  The other thing I have been doing is Dr. Joe’s Dispenza’s guided meditation.   And guess what I have no more pain.

So today I bought the Neems toothpaste and will be adding that to my work out along with starting a guided meditation series on total health from Dr. Depok Chopra and Oprah, 21 day Meditation Challenge: Total Health.

I believe the mind and spirit can heal the physical body.  The other thing I have done is to stop taking my thyroid medication and I am using a Thyroid Support Supplement to get my thyroid back in balance.  I am still alive so I am guessing that so far that is ok but I look forward to working with the meditation series to work on the thyroid as well.

…..back to the beginning ……part 2

Westwood Village in early 1980’s was a veritable  play ground.  Back in those days couples would be out walking about the Village hand in hand–oh so romantic. There was so much to see and do  It seemed to offer everything: restaurants, boutiques, quaint Old World architecture, an upscale crowd, a party atmosphere after dark,  movie theatres and dance clubs where you could disco the night away, even if I was a bit underage at the time.  It was a time when a young girl could walk about the village by herself and be safe.

But for me the real draw to the Village were street performers all over the village, mimes, jugglers, magicians variety acts.  You could find them all over the village but the prime location was the triangular corner in front of the then Glendale Bank building on the corner of  Broxton & Kinross–I think there is a restaurant there now.

It was the spot for street performers.  Of course the Hare Krishna in their saffron-colored robes would often get there early for dancing and chanting but right after is when the juggling started.

For a young virgin just out of an all girls high school it was the “carnival” come to town but every weekend.  And I was there.  I would catch the number 12 bus on Saturday nights and I was meeting new friends and hanging out.

So, of course when I decided that I wanted to learn how to juggle I knew I would ask the juggler I had seen performing in Westwood.  These guys were amazing…they would juggle balls, clubs, torches, knives.  To my young and naive eyes it was all amazing and astounding.  I was discovering a world of performance beyond the walls of my dysfunctional home life.  It was my escape into fairytale world of my own creation.

So there we were a group of us in clown costumes and make-up walking over from U.C.L.A. campus to promote Mardi Gras and of course my side objective was to head over to the juggler.

So, off I went through the village passing out flyers and having a grand time…and then the jugglers had a break in their performance.  Now was my chance……I walked over and introduced myself.  I told him I wanted to learn how to juggle and would he teach me?

He said yes and we exchanged phone numbers……..to be continued……

Unruly kids and Yappy dogs…….

My two biggest pet peeves are unruly kids in public and yappy dogs on 25 ft. retractable leashes.

This morning after having gotten a tetanus shot because I had gotten bitten by a neighbor’s dog this past weekend I decided to stop at an outlet store and do a little shopping.

There were two little girls ages about 3 and 4 playing with toys on the floor at the end of an aisle blocking the aisle.  So in order to get to the aisle you had to manuever around the two little girls.

And then the banshee like screaming starts.  Five minutes later still screaming…..10 more minutes, still screaming………15 minutes, still screaming and no parental intervention.

At the 20 minute mark I could not take it any more.  I walked out of the aisle and asked this woman to please attend to her child.

Before I continue let me describe this women, early 20’s Latina woman , with dyed blond hair, blue eyes, which I am guessing since the hair was fake most likely so were the eyes, on the chubby side wearing leggings and a tight t-shirt.  Now that you have the picture in your mind, I shall continue.

She immediately got ghetto on me….I am talking hand on the hips, head swirling ghetto.  She started calling me a bitch and a few other expletives.  And told me that she knew what was wrong with her child. I believe my response was, “well in that case why don’t you control her. My mother had rules for public behavior when I was a child”.

She then said, “There’s the front door.  Why don’t you leave the store. And I am not you”.  My response was, “Obviously and I walked away”.  I believe I muttered something like Jesus Christ under my breath at which point ghetto mom walked back to the aisle I was in, hand on hips and stared at me, as if that was going to make me leave the store.

I thought this woman was going to hit me and I almost wish she had because then I would have called the cops, she would have gotten arrested and child social services would have picked up her kids.

She eventually walked away…….she eventually said to her child, “stop whining”.

Why did it take a 20 minute tantrum and a total stranger asking this woman to deal with her child before she did anything?

My mother had rules and every time before we set foot out the front door she would remind us of the behavior that was expected of us in public places.  Why do people think that it is ok for their child/brat to disturb the peace of others in public places?

My dog is not allowed in stores (exception Petco).  My dog is not allowed in restaurants or to fly beside me on a plane.  And yet my 60 lb dog is better behaved than most people’s kids.

I can guarantee you that my dog will not be disruptive inside a store, a restaurant or on an airplane.

Can you say the same of your kids?  Granted not all dogs are well-behaved or trained either.  That’s my next big pet peeve.  Small yappy dogs, totally out of control on a 25 ft retractable leash charging and barking at my 60 lb dog.  Are they nuts? Do they have some kind of death wish?

People control your dogs.  I can not just pick up my 60 lb dog and hold it in my arms in the event of a problem.  No, I had to train my dog.  Please do the same with yours because the next time one of your yappy, rat dogs comes charging at my dog I will not tell her to sit and stay, quite the contrary I will tell her to go for it.  Hmnn, maybe then you might train your unruly dogs.

So if you see some woman out in public telling a parent to control their child, it will probably be me.

If we all took a stand on such disruptive behavior maybe some of these parents might just get a clue…………
